Feel free to choose from its many flavor variants. Instead of making the dumplings from scratch, you can use a biscuit baking mix (Bisquick). If it comes out clean, the dumplings are done. The best way to check is by sticking a toothpick into the center of a dumpling. Just because they’re floating, doesn’t mean they’re done. Undercooking the dumplings will leave them tasting like raw flour. If you cook them too long, they’ll disintegrate into the soup. Buttermilk is more acidic than regular milk, which means it reacts better with baking soda.
